A staple of classical music, but a rare form nearly everywhere else, a great long song is something to behold.

Whether it be a chill out tune that drifts on and on (à la Lamb or Kruder & Dorfmeister), a live performance from a band getting lost in the moment (see Skynyrd's 'Free Bird' on the Old Grey Whistle Test), or a Jazz set infused with much improvisation or solos (Jimmy Smith's 'Got My Mojo Working'), or a drum and bass track that's perfect to drive to (LTJ Bukem for example), songs that last 7 or 8 minutes or longer can be wondrous things.

Yes, the era of 78s and the 33rpm 'single' record probably were the limiting factors in the length of popular songs in the 20th century; now people expect something relatively brief - and with some sort of visual aspect, which I inevitably find tiresome - and thus have probably evolved into members of a species with a shorter attention span than before!

For something truly wondrous try the songs here. The subject of the page is 'only' a five-minuter, but Im Abendrot (At Twilight) is a great Long Song. I think Strauss was eighty-five when he wrote them.

They're neither academia nor something useful; but they are glorious. Beim Schlafengehen is more about 'going to sleep' at the end of one's life than at the end of the day, but I didn't think that would go down well.

So I left it out of the description!
