The Golden Girls was an American sitcom that originally aired Saturday nights on NBC from September 14, 1985 to May 9, 1992.
According to The Golden Girls Trivia Guide, The Golden Girls is the third most popular sitcom in syndication, after Seinfeld and Friends.
The sitcom was originally conceptualized by NBC executive Brandon Tartikoff. Tartikoff was visiting his elderly aunt one day and saw how she and her next-door neighbor, who was also her best friend, interacted with each other. Despite their constant bickering and arguments, they were still the best of friends and loved each other. He thought that would make a great storyline for a show.
