It is nice that you enjoy yourself hijacking just another item. But you can rest assured, its not so pleasant for others that actually seek some kind of stimulating conversation - be it about something interesting or something really funny.

Spitting in the face of people who put thought into items and descriptions, show some responsibility and want to encourage a discussion is not so cool either.

This starts to get old, folks.

I'm just sayin'
Boomstam

whats wrong showing people how its not be done. (btw could you really have a conversation about this? that i find pretty good)

This starts to get old, folks.

It is already old, granted I tend not be one of the most stimulating conversationists on this site myself, but still. Part of the of the reason I don't want to even click on the items that have new comments anymore is either a) it'll be comments like "Music is my life" or b) childish/flirting/off-topic conversations like the one present here (comment on peoples profiles if you want to do that), and it's always the same people doing it. I miss the old bestuff (when it was thebeststuffintheworld, lets say), but I guess the site is growing and with growth comes change.

May I add: Besides what lackadaisy so eloquently put in her description and what Aimee just said – a sentiment which I, unfortunately, share: the bullying that starts as soon as someone even dares to start something constructive is also not so cool.

To only have the kind of conversations you want, the internet probably isn't always the best place. Some people use the internet as a means of conversations, others just want to be silly and have fun. If you can't deal with both of them I have a great place for you......

BINGO!!!! People sit around and converse while turning there hearing aids up to hear there numbers being called.

trixareforkids

The only thing I have a problem with is the people who comment on EVERY SINGLE item, and their comments are something along the lines of "I like this," or "yeah." That's just ridiculous

As Aimee already pointed out, there are stuff pages, that are supposed to be read by people because they are interested in the stuff they voted on. And there are the profile pages for all the unrelated chatter. At least this is how I understood the concept of the site and this was, what made thebeststuffintheworld so enjoyable in the first place (and set it apart from most sites on the internet, with their rather unpleasant signal-to-noise ratio). Not to mention that there is witty silliness, and then there is not-so-witty silliness that might seem funny to a few, but after a while isn't for the others, at least not when there is no longer room for much else. But even this remark starts to get old.
dumbbrunette
dumbbrunette posted over 5 years ago

There is a time for conversation and there is a time for "chatter" as you put it, and thats what makes bestuff so great because you get the 'best' (no pun intended) of both worlds. Not everything has to be 'witty'' conversation, sometimes its nice just to foolishly bs with people.

swissbob
swissbob posted over 5 years ago

I agree with DB. My own comments sometimes are brillant and some time just silly. And I love the new kids, that have to post a comment to every single item they vote for. It's so stickybeak (as they say in Australia). What bestuff trully don't need is any form of censorship.

Yeah!

Boomstam is fun-ny!! Sorry... I like to-tally agree with Steph and swissbob. Whatever they said really makes sense to me and I love it! There was a new stuffer a while ago that did literally have a comment on every topic I looked at during one of my visits, I thought to myself What'd you do comment on everything? But isn't that what this site is for? No, not every comment people leave is thought provoking, or "on-topic", or even coherent. There are also some comments that are obnoxious and flat out rude, it's difficult to ignore sometimes, but I do. And if a conversation is getting off-topic, I try to get it back on topic, unless the off-topic conversation is interesting... well then I go with it. I think the diversity of personalities this site has gathered makes it much more interesting, and with the addition of each new member comes a another different opinion & viewpoint that we could all benefit from.

NimbleMarmoset
NimbleMarmoset posted over 5 years ago

I am ok with chatter.
I do not understand, however, why people feel the need to say with every item bested "I love this!". Is this not unnecessarily redundant? You bested the item, therefore I assume you like it.

I, by no means, want censorship. I don't want such posts banned. This is why I would like a "mark all comments as read" button. But by besting this category, I do not demand people follow it, but I request for people to.  For my part, this is just a request for people to please.. not comment with merely an "I like it". Do you understand where I am coming from? The site is about the best stuff in the world. We vote for things we think are the best. By voting, you are already saying that you love what you "bested". Comments like "I like this!" are almost exactly like double, duplicate posts on a message board.

ileah
ileah posted over 5 years ago

that was directed at me wasn't it!

....yeah your right it's is really redudant.....i feel like i should right a big long paragragh to fit in, or maybe i just want to squeeze meself into every conversation. i tend to to that. most of the time..any way ook well i've run out of stuff to say so im goingto leave now before i start babbleing uncontrolably

Swissbob, I think no one argues for any kind of censorship whatsoever. That would be truly silly. And should anyone have interpreted my comment in this way, I'm honestly sorry.

All I wanted to say is that there was a time when I was happy to find new comments because they were at least unpredictable, while now I often just want this big "mark all read" button. And at times I just wished people would wait until they have something to say before they say something, be it then however silly or chit-chaty as it may be, that's just fine. But lackadaisy and Nimbles worded this much better, of course.

So, no, censorship is Evil®, but I think that investing a tiny bit of consideration from time to time might not hurt Bestuff. But maybe that's just me.

swissbob
swissbob posted over 5 years ago

The word censorship I used was probably to harsh. My knowledges of the English language are limited so I have to work with the ones I have. But I feel a little bit unconfortable when people is aked to shut up, if they haven't pearls to deliver. For my part it is refreshing and gaily when (mostly) young gals say: "I love music, hehe".

It is the evening of the day
I sit and watch the children play
Doin' things I used to do
They think are new
I sit and watch
As tears go by

The big red read-all-button is a nice idea, i love it ;)

Anyways, if you monitor the stuff "music" you will see most "music is my life" comments are made by new people. New users that maybe use the add comment button for the first time. And how could it be in a diffrent topic then music, maybe love and anime are just as worse. That some users take this fact up to use it with irony and sarcasm doesnt ment its not thought over. "Hijacking" in the case is nothing more then playfull joking about something we all dislike(and has nothing , absolutely nothing to do with the stuff here added by lackydaisy, IMHO)

With all respect to Nimble, as right you are about the topic, the people reading it here understands the frustration, but"music" will always be spammed with useless comments. 2500 bested what else could you expect.

And if people say bestuff has become useless to have conversations, because of the spamming, i have to totally disagree on that. Take as example finrod in the maths or quaser topics. Hey or look at ourselfs right here. So its up to every person him/herselfs to enjoy a stay on this site, where you can talk about what you want, only not in "music"

gbman
gbman posted over 5 years ago

I like the idea of a big red read all button, I feel like I need that too. I have more to say, but I just wrote a lot but my computer froze, and I don't feel like re-typing it all. All I want to add is that I have noticed a lot more of stuffs on my list are being ignored, eventhough they have new comments, because there are just too many to keep track of. And frankly I have said all I need to say on a particular topic.

dumbbrunette
dumbbrunette posted over 5 years ago

Swissbob I loved your rolling stones quote it describes perfectly how I feel when I see new users on the site clicking everything they like and saying "I like this" or "this is my favorite". i did the same thing until you meet friends and start chating with them more in depth on topics.

Anyways I've decided that a big red read all button would do us all some good, also that we all have a huge problem with the 'music' forum, and that with every comment you have to take a grain of salt, especially if it's a new user.

purple octopus
purple octopus posted over 5 years ago

While I do find some people's comments irritating in places, it's not something that I'm gonna let get to me. It's a fact of the universe that where many people gather, some of them will rub you the wrong way, and therefore it's ultimately unavoidable.

With regard to music, which everyone points to, I'm probably in the minority in that I actually don't mind at all the fact that there's a place people can come and just confess their undying love for music. A wall to scribble on, if you will. I agree with Boomstam that it's just gonna happen - you'll never get that many people into a conversation that is in any way tangible; for a decent conversation there is a finite amount of people that can take part, and I'm certain that we all find that in other areas of the site.

At the end of the day, if it bothers you that much you always have the option to remove it from your list! Everyone loves music, it's a given, and I don't instinctively feel that people who haven't bested music don't love it as much as the rest of us.

First they wanted us to spell our postings correctly, now they want us to think about them, what next, do we have to check our facts??? I had to take Bubble Wrap off my favorites cuz I couldn't stand to hear any more about how people  just loved to pop it.

dumbbrunette
dumbbrunette posted over 5 years ago

So I wanted to ask your guy's  opinion,

Is it inappropriate to use a persons real name in a public comment if the rest of the people in the conversation don't know the person by their real name?

Because I often do this, it seems to make the comment more personal; but of lately I've stopped because I figure its a public forum and things shouldn't be that personal.

belacqua
belacqua posted over 5 years ago

Hm, this is a more personal way to post, but I would consider two things: does the person want her or his real name to be used publicly everywhere on Bestuff? If not, better don't. And: will other people reading the conversation know what's going on? The later would usually not be the case for comments on stuff, meant to be read by anyone, many of whom might not know the names of other Bestuffer. So, on stuff pages I'd always stick with the usernames. On the other hand, in comments on profile pages using real names seems quite fine and a nice way to make the conversation more personal, provided the other person feels comfortable with it. IMHO.

NimbleMarmoset
NimbleMarmoset posted over 5 years ago

I haven't yet had the time to read every post on here, but I just wanted to say that, ileah, no, I wasn't referring to you. I wasn't referring to anyone. :)

Finrod
Finrod posted over 5 years ago

Belacqua sums the situation up succinctly. There are various people on Bestuff whose (real) names I know, but I would never dream of using them outside of a private communication unless I was sure that the other person didn't mind.

Hideous Monster
Hideous Monster posted over 5 years ago

Think of it as a play. When you're in a play, it does no good to address other characters by the names of the actors playing them, because:

 1. the audience won't know who you're talking to,

2. the actor's name may match that of another character in the play, making it even more confusing, and

3. the actor to whom you're speaking won't want people to know that he knows you, after you've made such an idiotic mistake, and ruined the entire performance.

For similar reasons, you should avoid using a person's real name in an open internet forum. Make sense?

purple octopus
purple octopus posted over 5 years ago

Yarr, I agree. I think in comments a user name is the right thing to use. Private conversations, as Finrod states, is perfectly acceptable, but otherwise it's too personal. Apart from anything else, it may deter others from commenting as it's direct reference to someone else.

It's a bit like we're on a job and we all have our code names. Sweet.

Mr. Pink: How about if I'm Mr. Purple? That sounds good to me. I'll be Mr. Purple.

Joe: You're not Mr. Purple. Some guy on some other job is Mr. Purple. You're Mr. Pink.
dumbbrunette
dumbbrunette posted over 5 years ago

Mr. Pink: You can see that, can't you, Mr. White?

Mr. White: Look, enough of this "Mr White" shit--

Mr. Pink: --Don't tell me your name, I don't want to know! I sure as hell ain't gonna tell ya mine.

Mr. White: You're right, this is bad.

Thank you all for your input on the question and I will keep it in mind next time I have a conversation in a public forum.

I will refer to everyone by his/her username.. but I cannot do so for lackadaisy. I know her on other message boards, and the idea of calling her lackadaisy, when, by god, I have an unusual amount of difficulty asking my fingers to write the name, is annoying. So. Everyone, usernames. But if you see me calling lackadaisy a variety of names, mind not, please. It cannot and will not be helped. :)

dumbbrunette
dumbbrunette posted over 5 years ago

So why NimbleMarmoset are you allowed to break the rule, but the rest of us "usernames" must follow it??? Why can I not use the names of the users I talk to the most :Dennis, Henry, Colin, Katie, Ileah, Geoff, Zack, etc etc but you can use lackadaiseys real name which I do not know or else I would have said it …
