Gintama is a comedic manga created by Hideaki Sorachi. The original manga began in April 2004 and is currently being published by Shueisha under Weekly Shonen Jump. As of volume 17 the manga has sold over 17,000,000 copies in Japan. In March 2007, Shueisha announced that sales of the first volume had passed one million copies.

The story takes place in Edo (known as Tokyo) Japan, which has been taken over by aliens called Amanto since the late Edo period. The samurai of Japan have fallen, and the Amanto placed a ban on carrying swords in public. The story focuses on an eccentric samurai with a natural perm, Sakata Gintoki, his (partial) apprentice Shimura Shinpachi, and a teenage alien girl: Kagura. All three are "free-lancers" who search for work in order to pay the monthly rent, which usually goes unpaid anyway.

Gintama is the best anime in the world.

DONT EVEN THINK ABOUT PASSING GINTAMA UP

this is the only anime that can truely be called - perfect

IT'S INCREDIBLE - So amazing you can't even tell when they're doing fillers

Which is rarely [once every 50 episodes rarely

It has all the qualities needed in a good anime - pinch crush and suspense

not to mention it's UNBELIEVABLY FUNNY

there isn't a character i hate in it because all of the character's are AWESOME

the directors are so good it's insane

they've compiled the best voice actors EVER

the story line is amazing - there's no limitations with this kind of plot!

btw dont be tricked by the first 2 episodes it'll definately become one of your favorites if not your favorite anime

the genre for this anime is - comedy, action, shounen, parody, adventure, science fiction

dont think - oh i only like romance or i only like action - GINTAMA is an all rounder, it doesn't matter what you like because the Gintama genre is the BEST

if you like - Bleach, Ouran High School Host Club, Death Note, Naruto, Samurai Champloo pretty much ANY anime - you'll like Gintama

this is WITHOUt A DOUBT the best anime ever, nothing else even begins to compare
