Your taste is impeccable. This is certainly one of the best parts of the score for West Side Story (though I might be tempted across to I'd like to be in America with its hemiola rhythm (two groups of three matched with three groups of two)), but the best part of the musical is probably unwritten, strange to tell.
There is no aria from Maria following the death of Tony near the end because (from memory) Bernstein had three goes at it, but was never satisfied with the results.
This seems odd to me, because Bernstein was often satisfied with music - not in West Side Story - that is at best... well, mediocre.
I officially worship you for putting this up, Nimble. You read my mind!
The West Side Story soundtrack was the only bright spot in the teen-pop abyss of my early musical development, and six years later I still adore it. Fantastic music, lyrics and movie.
This has better lyrics than the vast majority of “regular” music—I could quote the whole thing since I’ve memorized virtually the whole musical, but I’ll spare you.
“It’s not I’m anti-social, I’m only anti-work,” the whole “My daddy beats my mommy…” verse, and rhyming “honor” with “marijuana” are all mind-blowing turns of lyrical dextrousness, though. Stephen Sondheim is a genius.
