From “Cheers” was originally meant to be a minor character for a few episodes, just meant to further Sam and Diane’s relationship. Although this was the intention, Kelsey Grammer’s acting made a large impression on the producers of the show, mainly because he made lines that weren’t meant to be funny, funny, that he later became a regular character, and got his own hit spinoff “Frasier” after Cheers ended. “Frasier” lasted eleven seasons, and won a record 39 Emmy Awards.

Quoth the Wikipedia:
Frasier’s character was introduced on Cheers in 1984 as a psychiatrist love interest for Cheers barmaid Diane Chambers (Shelley Long), who calls him to help Sam Malone combat his recent relapse into active alcoholism.
