Dumbbrunette: Yes, Italian is good but you cannot go around the world if you only speak Italian..it's not like English, that's why we have to learn other languages! lol

Princess: if you really can learn Japanese you are fantastic!! ;)

did you know that English is considered one of the hardest languages to learn? Some of it is because we combine things from other languages into ours and such. There was more to it, but I forgot.

dumbbrunette
dumbbrunette posted over 5 years ago

yep I knew that about english. I think part of it is that we add random silent vowels and letters to stuff, haha its my native language and I still can't get it right! :P

Clarabella
Clarabella posted over 5 years ago

Yes, I agree with you girls. English is the typical language which, at first, seems very easy to learn. But that is true only if you learn basic English... If you want to improve and become 'advanced', it can really be hard. Not to mention the hardest aspect, pronunciation!! English is the language where there are no steady rules for that. In Italian, as in German for instance, once you learn the basic rules of pronunciation, you can sort of read the language. In English there are always exceptions to the rules!!!

And yet I love your language! ;)

Lilybert
Lilybert posted over 5 years ago
Indeed. From the pov of an Italian at least, when you're beginning to study languages like French, there's a lot to take by heart, it gets boring but when you're done, the language is not that hard. On the other hand, if you want to learn to speak and write ("production" that is) like anglophones, you need to practise for years, kind of embrace the forma mentis of the people. But it's fun!
Clarabella
Clarabella posted over 5 years ago

Yeah, Lilybert. It's actually fascinating, learning English is a neverending job!!

:)

dumbbrunette
dumbbrunette posted over 5 years ago

haha well Im glad you gals enjoy the language so much, and if it makes any difference since English is nothing like any other language its hard for people who learned english first to learn any other language.

M_eanwhile

I wish schools would start teaching different languages from an earlier age, like very young. And just keep having us take the classes even when we're in high school. I know some people have no interest in learning them, but knowing different languages is very useful. It always best to start learning a language at the earliest possible age.

I think English is not that hard to learn, especially because where I live (Portugal), all foreign films and interviews and stuff like that are not dubbed, as they do in Spain and France; they're subtitled, and I believe that improves your capacity to associate the subtitles with the original dialogue and gain vocabulary. And also to get you more used to the spoken language and its rhythm, since my English teachers have always been portuguese and don't speak a word of English in classes. Incredible? I know.

I agree with you English…it is so simple to learn, because it's everywhere!!

Lilybert
Lilybert posted over 5 years ago

I disagree. Have you ever seen the site engrish.com?!

Clarabella
Clarabella posted over 5 years ago

English easy to learn? Hmmmm..............

I don't think that watching films in the original language is enough to learn English well. It can help improve, but you need to be taught the language structures and basis at the beginning.

Anyway, I wouldn't say that English is more difficult to learn as compared to other foreign languages - ever tried learning German? ;) - I am just saying that every language can be as hard, especially if you want to reach an advanced level. They all have their particular difficulties.

swissbob
swissbob posted over 5 years ago

English is as hard to learn as every (foreign) language. But, I think, it's quite easy to communicate in English with other people.

dumbbrunette
dumbbrunette posted over 5 years ago

why is it easy to communicate in english ?

Clarabella
Clarabella posted over 5 years ago

At a basic level, sure...:)

But think of speaking at a conference in English...or Italian...or German, or whatever... I think it would be quite difficult, as it wouldn't be just a matter of 'communicating'...

swissbob
swissbob posted over 5 years ago

I do not speak English very well. But during my travels I had planty of talks or discussion even over "difficult" matters as religion or philosophy. I spoke with people whits English as second language but also with people with English as mother-tongue. And when people was pleased to talk with me (or I with them) there were no communication problems. That's what I meaned with easy for communication.

I hope you understand me now. ;)

Clarabella
Clarabella posted over 5 years ago

Of course I understand, and I agree with you totally.

In a sense that, in terms of communication, English is the best and most concise language - which also explains why it is so widespread now.

I also wanted to clarify, though, that speaking English perfectly, if you are not a native speaker, is not easy. I mean, people can understand you easily, but making no mistakes and sound as good as a native speaker is just another thing. ;)

p.s. I am not talking to you, Swissbob, for I think your English is excellent! ;)

Plus, I wish I could speak German as you do...;)

dumbbrunette
dumbbrunette posted over 5 years ago

True English is a good language to know because it is so widespread, but even for a native speaker it is difficult at times. I mean I've been speaking/learning english for 19 years and I still haven't got it down. I don't think anyone will ever master true english its to complicated.

but bad english I've got that down to a T, ahaha which is probably something i shoudn't brag about  :)

!nês..
!nês.. posted over 5 years ago

Of course it becomes hard when you're in an advanced lever. What doesn't?  I wasn't talking about mastering the language, because that isn't easy even for English people. I meant having good writing, communication and comprehension skills, and it's a lot easier if that foreign is surrounding you in everything you do (Internet, television, adds, videogames, gadgets, etc, etc) than having a lesson once in a week.

I think everyone should try to learn at least one foreign language, and be able to read some foreign literature in that language, or watch a movie in its original sound...

It just helps broaden one's horizon...

Hello everybody, this is midory from peru .let me introduce myself first,I am 19 years old and I am studying English at institute,my mother touge is Spanish and I speak a little Japanese ,too.however I would  like to study foreign languages because some time in the future. I`d like to be a good language translator …..well, I think this  topic is very interesting. All the people need to learning more than one language, Learning language other than our mother language is very important, we can know the culture from another country or region and it makes us become wiser to avoid any differentiations between countries. I strongly believe that  learning foreign language is very important in our life because Foreign languages are very useful in several areas; for instance, for business connections, intercultural exchanges or tourism. That’s the reason why learning foreign languages should be fostered all around the world .I convinced that speaking foreign languages gives you a better status.”.for example , if you don’t speak a second language, you are a step behind and the lack of languages will bring you issues, like when you try to find a job. The most frequent language learned is English however I think that the people shouldn`t   learn only english… One of the things people in my country suffer from is a lack of knowledge of other languages.  Because English is understood in many countries our schools don't try very hard to teach other languages.  They should.  You need to know at least a little of three or four languages and cultures before you can appreciate the diversity and different ways of thinking that exist in the world.
As a conclusion, I’d say that, the languages play an important role in the formation and expression of an individual’s personal identity .
