“Evangelical” is not the correct term for Pat Robertson, Jerry Fawlell, et al. “Fundamentalist” is the proper nomenclature, but its negative connotations do not serve the political ends of these people and their followers.
Evangelicals were abolitionists like William Wilberforce or pacifists like the Quakers. This legacy is not being honored by a religious group that allies itself to a political party of warhawks that rarely supports social programs. I also fail to see the purpose behind challenging the theory of evolution or trying to ban Harry Potter books from schools in a true evangelical’s service to the world.
If you want more information on the difference real evangelicals and those who claim that title to day, see Richard Balmer’s “Thy Kingdom Come: How the Religious Right Distorts the Faith and Threatens America — an Evangelical’s Lament.”
