The character is self-described as three-and-a-half years old, and refers to himself in the third person.
In the past, he has been preformed by puppeteers Caroll Spinney and Jerry Nelson, amoung many others. At first, he was referred to as "Baby Monster." He was used as a background character, undergoing many changes in appearence.
He was finally named "Elmo" in Season 12 of Sesame Street. At the time his puppeteer was Brian Muehl. In 1984, Richard Hunt took over for the little red monster. After a year, Hunt turned over the role of Elmo to Kevin Clash (reason being Kevin was the only person in the lounge with him at the time.)
Around that time, writer David Korr decided that he liked the red puppet, and began writing Elmo in more and more frequently as a main character. And for over two decades, Elmo has since been preformed by muppeteer Kevin Clash.

my sort of a friend (actually not really cuz he's annoying and everyone is sick of him) he is crazy for Elmo, he has a red shirt with a huge face pic of Elmo on it, and he has Elmo plush toys, Elmo shoelaces, etc. and he tries to talk like Elmo. Elmo is okay, but sometimes he is too annoying, theres Elmo's potty dvd, showing how to go to the toilet, and a toilet song, its weird.
