A lot of Edward Hopper’s (not to be mistaken for the actor, Dennis Hopper!) paintings suggest possibilities between people. He also painted landscapes where a human presence is sometimes eerily evoked. His best-known piece, Nighthawks, has been copied (probably more than once) and re-named, Boulevard of broken Dreams — to include James Dean, Marilyn Monroe and Humphrey Bogart. His paintings capture a certain kind of loneliness… in a very specific moment. Needless to say, he’s a favourite painter of mine.
I did a monologue about Edward Hopper’s paintings for an audition once.
As no other painter Hopper shows the absence of god in this world.
I can’t describe the feeling I had when I finally could see his work in situ, instead of books and magazines, but it’s something I rarely get to feel. I agree with swissbob, his work is meaningful in that way
