Ear stretching is a trend that has it's roots in tribal Africa, where scarification and it's ilk were used as a rite of passage. Nowadays stretching and the like are used from almost pure aethestic purposes.
The black plug is most likely around 1/2'', the blue sillicone tunnel is 5/8''.
