Dragons have a multi-faceted history - if that's the right word for a mythical creature - which spreads almost completely across the varied cultures of the world.
Dragons can be symbols of good or evil; the bad press that the European dragon generates is offset by its benevolence in the East (where one word for dragon is 龍, pronounced in Mandarin lóng)
The Latin for dragon is draco; this in turn derives from the Greek drakon, which is (perhaps) itself derived from a root drak, as in edrakon, aorist of the verb derkesthai, to see clearly – referring to dragons’ supposed habit of watching over their hoards of treasure.
