From Wikipedia:
Michelangelo’s David, sculpted from 1501 to 1504, is a masterpiece of Renaissance sculpture and one of Michelangelo’s two greatest works of sculpture, along with the Pietà . It is the David alone that almost certainly holds the title of the most recognizable statue in the history of art. It has become regarded as a symbol both of strength and youthful human beauty. The 5.17 meter (17 ft) marble statue portrays the Biblical King David at the moment that he decides to do battle with Goliath. It came to symbolise the Florentine Republic, an independent city state threatened on all sides by more powerful rival states. This interpretation was also encouraged by the original setting of the sculpture outside the Palazzo della Signoria, the seat of civic government in Florence. The completed sculpture was unveiled on 8 September 1504.

Millions of people must have seen the sculpture now. Its a great legacy for Michelangelo :)
You bet! I surely did see it ;-), as I took myself some of the pictures I posted!
They’re nice pics :) Does the sculpture move from inside to outside then?
Ha-ha, nice comment! You are right, I have to specify then: there are three statues of David in Firenze (Florence). The original inside the Accademia Museum, and two exact copies are in Piazza Signoria and Piazzale Michelangelo, a big square with a breathtaking view of the city (check ‘Firenze’ as a best stuff!!). The latter is where I took the picture outside!
Ah ha. I see now. I should have guessed they wouldn’t let pigeons sit on the original :D lol. I’m surprised they let you get that close to the original come to think of it :)
That is also because the statue is very big, imposing.. so you cannot miss it, and I have a good zoom on my camera!! ;-)
Lol. A big zoom captures everything doesn’t it lol
yeah, especially the best parts… if you see what I mean!!!! hahahah!!!!!!! I love that rear part of David…;-p
I’m usually not big on sculpture, but the David is my favorite by far.
Lol. I caught your drift on both counts Clara :D
I am happy you enjoyed David!! Dosymedia, I agree with you. I have a crush on him!! ;-) He is a handsome, ‘very quiet’ guy… ;-)) LOL !!!
I don’t enjoy David half as much as you! lol. I’d be interested in knowing exactly how he pleases you too? lol
Ok, I’ll tell you about it next time…hehe… I have to go!! ;-)
I bet you have giant posters of him on the wall beside your bed! lol
not a giant poster, no.. but I do have a 2007 calendar, which every month gives me a new reason to be … very excited!! ;-)
Lol. Are there any statues of famous Italian women? I want to take a look! lol
I think some Monica Bellucci pictures can do as well!! lol
I just added her to my “stuff”, had to create a new category for her tho :D
Thanks for the new pics. The face close up is something new.
He has quite a pained expression on his face. I bet he was thinking “how much longer do i have to stand here and pose like this for” lol.
LOL ! He is thought to be Michelangelo’s boyfriend at the time. Good taste! ;-)
Are you saying you like stone men, or gay men, or gay men made of stone? lol
Well I was just guessing what the model was like… since the sculpture is so faithful to the original. Probably a nice looking young man, tired of posing for the Maestro. That’s the bored expression!
If i were Michelangelo the statue would be called “Clarabella” and i’d have had you stood there with a bored expression on your face lol.
ok! not sure about the results, though..;-)
Well i’m doing the sculpting so i can “augment” you a little here and there for posterity. You’ll come out just fine, don’t worry about it lol
Hehe, the David’s got another pair of eyes stuck on his rear—mine!! Every time I pass from Piazza Signoria or Piazzale Michelangelo, I can’t help doing that :DDD
This statue set the standard for perfectly capturing the human form! I actually ordered a little replica of the statue from an art magazine, I studied art history in college, and when I saw the mini David, I just had to have it. It’s on the mantle in our livingroom. Regrettably ladies, everything on the staute is scaled down, everything. Just in case you were wondering!
Grazie Clarabella!!!
You are welcome GBman… also in Florence, of course…;)
Of course!! :)
