I think the only reason I would put one hand on the floor while crouching would be because I felt I was about to fall over.

Ah, Hideous Monster, the hand on the floor is indeed to steady yourself, either while lurking or when landing. Plus it gives you more power when you're ready to move, whilst still leaving one hand free for weaponry or defence. The ideal position to be in.
And with that, it's time for me to vannish.
