Following the brutal murder of his parents when he was only five years old, Jadon West is sent to live with his uncle in Redding, California, a far cry from England, the place of his birth. Living in the land of celebrities and motion pictures makes him yearn to become a Hollywood director. After graduating from high school, Jadon hopes to land a job allowing him to save enough money to attend UCLA. Jadon is soon hired as a butler at a beautiful Californian estate, in town called Diamond Lake. On his first day of the job, he is delighted with the elegant mansion, the servants, and Mrs. Eden, the owner of the house. But to his surprise, there is one facet of this seemingly normal life that doesn’t make sense. One room in the house must remain locked at all times-and Jadon is forbidden to enter it. Curiosity gets the best of him, however, and Jadon sneaks into the room only to unearth suspicious clues as to Mrs. Eden’s true identity-along with some mysterious objects that appear to be used for magic rituals. Just what has he gotten himself into? He’s about to find out…

A few days later, my curiosity had consumed me.I had to find out what was in that crazy room.
Around 11:30 at night, I slithered downstairs to get the
keys from the kitchen.
This time, I had my flashlight with me. As I got back upstairs,
I switched on the flashlight and slowly inched my way
toward the end of the hallway.
Only two steps away from the door, I heard a thumping sound
coming from inside the room. I nervously took the keys out
of my pocket and tried to unlock the door—but
it was already unlocked. When I went inside,
I flicked my flashlight on the walls, trying to
find the light switch. When I found it, I rapidly
flipped it and stood frozen for a moment, with my eyes
wide open, scouting the room. The hand that I hadgrabbed was still there. But it was not a human
hand; it was the hand of a large doll sitting up
against the wall on a stool, with her arms extending out to each side.
The Turning Point
Overcoming the tragedy of loosing one’s parents can be seemingly insurmountable. The loss of one’s parents at the tender age of five can shatter a life forever. That is the challenge faced by Jadon West, the main character in The Turning Point (published by iUniverse), the inaugural novel of author Chris Curtis.
Young Jadon West had everything a child could ask for; a fine London home, loving parents and anything his heart desired. That is, until an unfortunate series of events conspired to take his parents from him. An orphan at the age of five, he is forced to move from the world he knows across the globe to live with his Uncle Pete, in Redding, CA.
Jadon moves past his loss and grows up as a typical American boy. After graduating from high school, he is accepted to UCLA, though not by choice. His uncle applies to UCLA on Jadon’s behalf. Angry at first, Jadon comes to realize that his Uncle only wanted to see his beloved nephew realize his full potential.
In order to make money to pay for school, The Turning Point finds Jadon taking a summer job working as the personal assistant to an aging affluent, Mrs. Eden. The flamboyant, outlandish and ultimate warm hearted Mrs. Eden proceeds to open her young assistant’s eyes to things he never conceived; and not just the world of high society money. Mrs. Eden has a secret life underneath the one the outside world sees. Not only is she a really a highly successful writer living incognito, she is also a practitioner of ‘magick’.
I sat beside her, on her bed, to listen to what she had to say. She started telling me that she became interested in witchcraft when she lived in Louisiana. And the witchcraft that she got involved in was not like the witchcraft that a lot of people are familiar with. It was called hoodoo. “Do you know what hoodoo is?” she asked me.
“No. Is it like voodoo?” I murmured.
“Not really. You see, voodoo is a religion. Hoodoo is a practice. Root work and so on. The unique thing about hoodoo is that everything is already prepared for you! You don’t have to learn witchcraft for hoodoo. Whether it’s remedies, spells, oils, or other things, you don’t have to worry about anything, because everything is already done for you.”
I stared at her in amazement. “Wow, so is it white or is it black magic?”
“Mostly good,” she said, with the mini cigar still in her mouth. She then asked how I would spell the word magic.
“M A G I C,” I said.
“No, Jadon, it’s M A G I C K, with a K. Real magick is spelled with a K.”
