Character: from the Greek χαρακτήρ "engraved or stamped mark (on coins or seals), branding mark, symbol"

Everyone should have character, and most people do, but I think character is also good for inanimate objects. An old worn seat has plenty of character, for example. Now this doesn't mean that you can just go up to something and spill beer all over it and burn holes in it and say it has character. Character has to be procured, as it does within humans. See, I don't mind if, when reading, I bend the spine back a little and it creases. Character. Or I'm walking down the road and my jumper gets snagged and a thread or two pulled out. Character.
