Butterflies are a group of insects belonging to the Lepidoptera ("having wings with scales") together with moths. The beautiful colours of many butterflies are created by either pigments in the scales (each individual scale has only a single colour) or by structural phenomena (often light interference in scales with small holes) such as the blue irridescence of Morpho butterflies or small blues. They are often used in art and commercials to represent the Psyche, metamorphosis and the free spirit. They go through a complete metamorphosis from egg to larva to pupa to adult (so do wasps, flies and beetles, for instance).
