Oh, I would feel like I was giving away my diary. If it's a book that you like, that another person absolutely loathes, and you give it to them, you may be embarrassed. I would be. I have several most definately non-Christian books, and some very strictly Christian friends ...
Non-Christian books?? Please to explain…
oh, nothing horrible. just stuff she doesn't allow herself to read … mainly His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman, (which basically says that God dies and humans don't go to heaven) and a tonne of fantasy. for some reason, she doesn't like fantasy. says it "goes against her religion". you know, "burn the witch!" and all that jazz.
Oh, that's funny. And I totally agree with what you mean about the diary.
I lend out books that i really liked in hopes that other people will fall in love with the characters also but then i get self concious because what if they like hate the book that i've been raving about, or what if they lose it or ruin it or something and i have to go out and get a new copy that hasnt even been read.
If not reading one, the best thing to be writing.
When i come across a good book, i end up buying the same book again if i find that there is a different cover.I have 4 copies of The Sillmarilion, all with unique covers.
I can't stand it when the book turns into a movie and then they (the book people XD) change the cover of the book to the same as the cover of the movie.
German publisher are even more disgustful. They do not only change the cover, they imprint "the book to the movie".
What does that mean, "imprinting the book into a movie"?
You know what's kind of corny, is when you have a novel which has been given the movie treatment, and then for the new editions they put in "8 full color pages of photos from the movie!". For some reason I have quite a few of those lying aroung the house.
Of course, we can all agree that most movie adaptations of books suck, they're not true to the source material, yada yada yada I'll stop now :p
Im sure we could all agree that over half the movies that are from books suck! but thats because the director wants his vision to be apart of it, its because most of the actors haven't read the book they're acting, and because production compaies dont want to pay the price to have it done right! :P
not to mention the best part of a book is using your imagination and in the movies you dont
I think a movie and a book are two coplete different things. They should not be compered or mixed up. A book can be told in the "I-form". This do not work for a movie. There's an attempt to do it. I'm not sure but I think it's "the lady in the lake" after the Chandler novel.
a movie in 1st person? that would be interesting to see.
But I beg to differ on the comparison comment. If a movie is based off a book then why can't they be compared?
i LiKE BooKS oN tAPe!!
The movie is directed by Robert Montgomery who also play the chief part. IMBD explain it better then i could.
@ Kink: Books on tape are ok especially if you have long rides to work everyday.
@ Swissbob: It sounds interesting, but Im still iffy about a movie in 1st person
What about when they change the title of a book to match the movie? They did this with Michael Chrichton's Eaters of the Dead; they changed it to The Thirteenth Warrior because that is what they called the movie.
Also, when I was working at Waldenbooks, several people asked me if the Lord of the Rings books were novelizations of the movies. *sigh*
In the case of the movie Blade Runner, I actually have some sympathy with the film makers; Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? isn't going to get them taking the box office by storm, is it?
Stupidity knows no boundaries, Precipitation. The Inland Revenue once got in touch with the conductor Sir Thomas Beecham and asked him if he knew the whereabouts of the composer John Fletcher (dead since 1625) for tax purposes.
"I was able to reply," Beecham recalled, "that to the best of my knowledge his present residence was the South Aisle of Southwark Cathedral, and I went on to venture the opinion that he might find some difficulty in changing it."His autobiography's called A Mingled Chime. More amusing than most.
Books contain the Universe around us and within our hearts...

Outside of a dog, books are mans best friend.
Inside a dog it's too dark to read.
Groucho Marx?
I love Groucho Marx…
I love those Best American Short Stories books. They're great.
hmm? I haven't heard of these…
You can find them at any Books-a-Million.
Has anyone here joined the goodreads site?
fraid not.
say, there's a pun/bar joke (best (or worst) of both worlds) about saying afraid not...
Yes, there is! It's not great.
I'll check out the site, Nomilove, I'm always looking for good recommendations!
there's nothing better than curling up with a good book (well maybe there is something better but I can't think of it right now!)
By reading a book you can be anybody and go anywhere. You get access to characters innermost thoughts and you can just escape from reality. I'm a huge bookworm, always have been and always will. Thank God I work in a library.
Good for you! Sounds like you found your vocation! I'm happy for you! As long as you enjoy it – it would be horrible if you got fed up with looking at books all day and never read anything again!
there is no frigate like a book, to take us lands away …
Right now I'm reading three books at the same time. :D
Yes, 3 books at a time is how I do it too. (One by the bed, one downstairs, and one in my purse for whenever I have to wait in a line or for an appointment.)
Foolishly, I think I have that beat! Let me see... one in the car for waiting around (a diary type affair - Microserfs by Douglas Coupland), two by my bed (one biography (Stephen Fry's) and one novel (Jane Austen's Emma)), at least one graphic novel at any one time (100 Bullets and Bone at present), and a factual book for learning (Hofstadter's Godel, Escher, Bach for the second time).
I must be some sort of masochistic idiot!
Oh yeah! I forgot about the car. Right now I have two in there! :)
Go on then, you have me intrigued… name your five books!
Currently: The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, The Elegant Universe, Glamorama, Feingold: The New Democratic Party, The Island of Lost Maps: A True Story of Cartographic Crime, Brunelleschi’s Dome: How a Renaissance Genius Reinvented Architecture…. oh, and I left a copy of The Reincarnationist in the back of the car (but don’t bother with that one anyway).
Hey NomiLove, are you really reading about Brunelleschi's dome? Wow, I feel honoured... :)
Isnt it intriguing the way he projected the dome in the 1400s?
Fascinating how he figured out how to build it in horizontal layers so that it would never collapse. The Duomo is truly an amazing work of art!
You bet! It's actually the 'cupola' (dome in Italian) as we name it here....;)
but i am surprised that anyone not from here can be so interested to even read a book about it. :)
i cant believe i didnt see this before, it would have been the first i would have "bested" books have saved my life many times im indebted to them !
Books make us think and we get knowledge from them.
I 'd say books are useful.. for what? Making me forget I'm bored. I like it, otherwise..
books are great when you want to escape harsh reality even if for a little while
books are the best!
i love books. i'm already planning on building me a library in my house someday. i have the plans all drawn up and everything. books helped me when i was little to excape from the bullies in my school and took me to so many places that i still dream about as an adult. now that im an adult, books still help me to better myself and keep learning something new.
Books are so interesting to read! That's why I have a book with me everywhere i go. :D hhehe
Readin books is so relaxing wen r sittin at a peaceful place lols
