Among the many breeds of cats, Birmans stand out as being extremely sociable, trusting, and domesticated. They are gentle, loving, companionable and loyal. Birmans enjoy human company and make a lot of eye contact. When those stunning blue eyes look deep into your soul, you will know that you belong to your Birman. They are very intuitive and sensitive to your moods – your Birman will always be there to cuddle you when you are feeling low, and will always be quick to taunt and tease you otherwise.

Birmans are very sociable and are there to greet you at the door when you arrive home. Whatever you are doing, your Birman will follow you from room to room. Sometimes they insist on participating en everything you do, and at other times want attention, you will be expected to stop what you are doing and give them your undivided attention until they are satisfied.

Birmans are intelligent and playful but not boisterous. On occasion they may suddenly rush around chasing a moth, but they will soon revert to their gentle selves. Birmans are patient, kind and even tempered, and are an ideal choice for families with children and other pets.

The most important point about Birmans is that they enjoy company. If possible, have another feline companion for your Birman, so that they will have one another for company when you are not there. Birmans are polite and don’t tend to be demanding, but they need love and attention to be truly happy cats.

The Birman is a cat with a look as ethereal as described in its legendary history. It is a strongly built cat and has a long and stocky body. An adult male cat weighs up 6 kg, with females proportionately smaller than males.

Birmans are covered with a coat of silky white or ivory-colored hair that develops a golden mist as they age. The hair on the legs, tail, face, and ears, called points, is darker than that of the body coat.

The Birman’s face and muzzle are round, with strong jaws and a firm chin. The ears are set apart as much to the side of the head as to the top of the head and are proportional to the cat’s size. Birman eyes are a deep blue. It should be set wide apart and appear almost round, creating a sweet, alluring expression.

Characteristic to a Birman are the white feet. While most pet owners refer to a cat’s white feet as mittens or boots, in the Birman these markings are called gloves on the front feet and gauntlets or laces on the hind feet. Judges look for symmetry and height of the front gloves on each foot, and it is gloving irregularities, such as too much or too little white, that often relegate a Birman to the status of pet quality rather than show quality. The gauntlets should extend one-half to three-quarters up the back of the hind legs ending in a point or inverted “V”.
