jupz, its part of the beowulf story as well. remember the mother that needed to be slain and the dragon from the mountain, and the "wendol"=grendol? its nice to see simalairities
Yes, let’s hope Angelina Jolie doesn’t spoil one of the greatest literary achievements of the Anglo-Saxon culture. Why do they keep putting her in historical movies? Wasn’t she the mother (!) in Alexander (The Great)?
I once worked at a school near me where the Head of History - a very jolly lady with the steel core necessary to be a schoolteacher - went to see Troy when it was released. It then became apparent that she was an expert on Homer, because one lunchtime in the staffroom, she laid into the story of the film with a vengeance, hardly pausing for breath as she itemised characters who lived that died in the book (and vice versa), altered plot points, and various other things that caused her bile to rise.
I don't like that sort of film either. So I didn't take the trouble to see the film in the cinema, and when it was recently shown on TV I wasn't impressed enough to watch it through to the end.
I know Beowulf fairly well (in translation) and can foresee something similar happening. I hope not.
On a different note, there's a book by Larry Niven (and Jerry Pournelle and Steven Barnes) called The Legacy of Heorot which chronicles a group of colonists on an alien planet who encounter some very dangerous animals that they call grendels. It's like Beowulf (obviously!) but is best summed up as a version of Aliens by people who know what they're talking about. Cracking read.
Yep…. the movie is amazing. Especially in 3D. And I don't just like every action movie I see. This one really was good. A thought-provoking script. And for a "cartoon" it's the most realistic action/fantasy film I've ever seen. See it in the theater while you can.
... The movie was.. perhaps the worst thing I have ever seen in a theater. Fortunately, it was so bad it was hilarious. The animation was wretched, the acting was embarrassing, and the script.. Jesus Christ, they should be ashamed of themselves.
Well, I liked it anyway. All the criticisms of reviewers I've read have had little more to point out than their own distaste for computer generated films. Some reviewers just said that the characters didn't seem believable, even as written. Saying the film was more like a comic book than a serious movie. I say that they seemed a lot more human than the original fable had them portrayed.

Hmm… I've given up on seeing all the trailers (dial-up too slow), but this could be interesting…
I don't like the look of it. It seems to be about how hot Angelina Jolie is.
it seems to be totally animated. even jolie. however im not sure what it is
jolie isnt hot, but maybe i have just a strange taste for females :P
She has a fat arse which is kind of good. But the rest of her isn't appealing!
Who cares about that when you're dealing with one of the greatest literary achievements of the Anglo-Saxon culture?

that movie i didnt liked much as historical movie
I'm really tired of these supposed mythological epic movies, that ruin the great stories with soul-less melodrama.
Once in a while a good one like Robin Hood Prince of Thieves comes along. I wonder if Angelina would have made that better or worse…

Yes, watch it.
If you want to laugh hysterically, that is.
Norse by Norse Worst, said the film critic in my newspaper. I don't think I'll be putting aside time to watch it.
The Golden Compass didn't get much of a write-up, either.

It came and went so fast, I didn’t even get to see it! I didn’t think Golden Compass was too bad though. It certainly could have been worse.
It could!
Expect the Beowulf DVD (and a 2-disc special edition?)pretty soon to try to recoup some more of the outlay.
