About the song...
Bruce Springsteen was having trouble with a song he had written-a working mans' lament,with a distinctly 'Latin' feel -it was simply not gelling with other material on his proposed album "Darkness on the Edge of the Town."He showed the song to Patti Smith,recording her third album,"Easter"in another room of the same studio building.She liked it,and altered the song arrangement to give it more of a 'rock' feel.She wrote from a female perspective-it worked.
Perhaps, when it comes to 'lamenting',the ladies have the edge!!!
At any rate her version of the song has become a classic single.At the time it rose to number 13 in the U.S.pop singles chart and to number 5 in the U.k.
Springsteen would sing his own version at concerts from 1978,onwards,but didn't record it on an album until "Live/1975-85."
