Is it always a good idea to assume that merely BEING yourself will get you through in life? What if you’re boring, or smelly, or addicted to displaying your genitalia on public transport?
Surely it is better to KNOW , UNDERSTAND and ACCEPT yourself first. Then you can exercise at least a nubbin of critical distance, and toss out (or at least manage) those aspects of your personality which are likely to be considered repulsive by those around you. There’s always a public dimension to our identity, and by strengthening our social aptitudes we reshape our personalities and our lives for the better and begin to remove much of the unease that can make us feel so miserable.
(yeah, whatever, and one of the things that you should ‘manage and reshape’ in your persoality is, for example, leaving a comment with your opinion and not erasing the others’s. That is definitely something ‘likely to be considered repulsive by those around you’. – !nês..)

With todays superficial culture this is one of the hardest things to do, but something we should all strive for.
Oh, I agree. Being yourself is something everybody should strive for, but you make a good point. I look at it like a bump in a road, it might be tough to get over it, but once you do it, it would be a wonderful thing. Too many people give up on their true selves in favor of "fitting in" to society. I have met so many different people, and the ones that truly stand out are the ones that are being themselves, it is so unique these days, it is the greatest quality a person can have.
I think that I do that to an extent despite being raised to not stand out, or to show your true self, very sad to live that way. I think I've done okay though.
people today r mean hatefull and take things when they get the chang me i never make fun of people because i no it will come back around to bite me in the as 10* harder so live life as if ur ass was on far take ever turn and short cut and stop to smell the rose ever once in allwhile u only get 100 years to live not ever
i <3 that drawing of the girl, its really good… well anyways being urself is the best thing u could do because u arent trying to fit in, people will get to kno u for who u are, and its how u will be remebered. i agree with all of u guys, it is one of the hardest things to do, especially now, but we still need to do it.

sometimes being our selves hurt, in my case at tyms i have to act like smthn else whch i really dnt like.
i always feel happy with being silly, which is how i naurally am and when i have to be all binsess-like at work it frustrates me but sometimes my sillyness comes out and people actually appreciate it..it makes them smile and making someone smile is one of the greatest things to me.

This is the hardest thing I have learned in my life. I was always trying to fit in with some group or another, it was hard because I didn't fit. The consequence to being yourself is that you have to love yourself, which I find unendingly rewarding. It took a long time but man is it worth it!!

Unfortunate that, reading through the comments, no one seems to ever really be themselves. Oh, well- there will always be hope that society will be destroyed by nuclear or biological war at some point.
