Atheism, in its broadest sense, is the absence of belief in the existence of deities. A narrower definition includes only those who believe that deities do not exist, and excludes those who hold no position on the question (see agnostics and other non-theists). In other words, an “atheist” can be defined as either:
- A person who does not believe that at least one god exists; or
- A person who has a positive belief that no god or gods exist.

you know, i'd understand if people were just looking for a way to fill the hole. but they want the hole. they want to live in the hole... and they go crazy when someone else pours dirt in their hole.
people believe in religion because they are afraid of learning that they are all alone in this wide universe. they need to know that their life stands for something. there is no way to know whether or not a god exists or not.
i cannot know enough to say much for other religions, but what i can say for christianity and catholicism is that they are both full of crap. they say jesus is the son of god. Why? because their bible says so. it's a fact that the bible was created and cunstructed by the catholic church with the intent of keeping the masses under control. the bible was just one more thing used to keep people ignorent. it told the already ignorent and uneducated commoners that if they should stray from their god, they would suffer for all eternity, while the modern concept is that god still loves you, but s/he'll condemn you to hell anyway.
2000 years ago, the church could sentance anybody to death just for disagreeing with it. the church decided that any story or passage that did not describe jesus christ as the son of god was to be excerpted from the bible. like the krishna and the buddha (did i spell that right?), a great and influential man jesus may have been, but he was certainly not a god.
there is no likely afterlife. The present life is what matters. there is no sin, just morales and manners. Do Not Waste Life, But Cherrish Life And Live It To The Fullest.
Clever, i think you’ll find that we are very much not alone – that doesn’t imply the existence of a God such as the one portrayed in the Christian religion, for example. But there is so much more beyond our tiny little microcosm of reality that we believe to be the end all, be all of existence.
Really, exercise an open mind. There are things that exist outside of established fundamental religion as we know it today, as we knew it centuries ago. And more and more modern day Christians are beginning ‘think outside the box’ in regards to church teachings. There are many people in the present day that are capable of subscribing to a structured belief system, no matter how devoted they may be, while exercising an open, but also critical mind.
It’s true, I think, that the simple concepts that Jesus, Buddha and Krishna etc imparted upon people have been exploited and twisted into institutions that are a means of control and manipulation. Anyone can observe this – a big one is terrorism.
You’re right, this life is what matters. It’s absolutely important to live it and cherish with as much love and enthusiasm as you can muster. But, IMO, it’s not stupid OR ignorant to believe that there is more after this life. Why should I believe that this is it? This is the end? It’s not because i’m afraid, not because i’m ignorant, not because i want to fill some sort of hole, not even because it has to do with my upbringing – i choose to embrace life, all aspects of it. This includes my spirituality and curiosity of the unseen. The idea transcends any religious or even human concept.
Look beyond the distorted view of religion created by the mind’s of humans. There’s more if you aren’t too ignorant to look.
i'm 100% atheist. And i've looked in the bible, in the coran.. heard everything possible about Buddhism, Hare Krishna,... .none of it sticks together in my head.
Christians: If god made us all, and loves us all, why am i going to hell for not believing in him? Why is there a hell, if this 'god' is all knowing, all loving and all forgiving? i just don't get it.
Btw, i thought that Christians were supposed to love even their enemies? sorry, but i don't feel the love here.
I want to reject the illness of religion.
Ooooooooohhhhh… What tall comments you have there, granny.
its only natural for people to look to believe and pray for something in a time of need, but to create a sci-fi figure and compare it strongly to other peoples beliefs is just ignorant! i understand people look for hope but they dont need to create a figure. The answer is philosophy right?
christianity is the one thing i less understand..
I think the majority of you are all ignorant.
It doesnt matter if youre christian, atheist, jew, muslim, etc.
Its arrogant assholes that i have a problem with. People that think "If you dont agree with my beliefs, then youre STUPID!" I just skimmed through the comments and im disgusted by a lot of your guys' mentality.
I myself am an atheist, and it really pisses me off how pig headed most people are.
Message to the narrowminded: stop being such ass cunts.
Person x declares Atheism.
By above explanation, this is a positive declaration to the declared negative, i.e. God.
God is now y. The general, Atheism, z.
x denies y, declaring the negative, z.
By reason of logic, we can now declare that, indeed, someone's pants are undone.
