Assasin's Creed is a title for the Xbox360 and Playstation 3, and was released in the fourth quarter of 2007.
The game was developed by the Ubisoft Montreal studio, the same developer that provided the work behind the recent trilogy of Prince of Persia games. While similar in both setting and game style, AC diffrentiates slightly in it's goal, requiring you to provide a number of assasinations on selected NPCs and 'bosses' within the game world.

The game's a lot of fun, particularly the running about on the top of buildings.
Far too much unnecessary story though.
I, actually, have never played it. I just watched my friend play it. It looked awesome. If I wasn't "video-game challenged", I would play it. lol
