My father and eldest brother are amazing when it comes to drawing, and i’m pretty good at it too. Drawing is an art, right?

for me art(drawing form of it!!)..is the best thing ever..i love it simply because i know that im gifted!!...its the one thing i know im the best at…the one thing i was born with..one of these days ..my pictures are gonna be among the best stuff in the world!!!!

art is everything to me. its a way of expresing your self to the world in a way that portrays you as someone who wants to be known. When a person sees art that you have created they arnt just seeing you but they are seeing what emotions you have inside you of. They are seeing that you arnt afraid to express you true self.

I was just thinking: mathematics shows beauty, but is it art? I’ve been pondering this about stuff like Euler’s Equation/Identity

My point being that while a mathematician finds stuff like this – previously hidden from view, so to speak – he/she doesn’t make it like an artist does.

To me, art is anything that is created with originality and creativity; a well written book for example.

gb seems on the right track with the theory, but shouldn’t art generally be anything created by or with the prospect of evoking emotion? Creation is important, but emotion, I feel, is more important.

(Also, people have analysed this question for centuries- I doubt we’ll ever get to the bottom of it!)

I think it’s more opinion based. If you think it’s art, let it be art; if not, that’s up to you too.

Okay, I didn’t set out to do this, but I was contemplating the word “art”; the very essence of the word. As I was looking through my list of Bestuff, it became clear to me that most of the items I have are “art” in one form or another. Try it for yourself…

As with any form of art it is subjective. I was, actually thinking more along the lines of inanimate objects.

Okay, but the way Jesus healed and raised people from the dead; that was an art. Also the sermon on the mount is a work of art.

Oh, he’s been in a few paintings… ;) It’s interesting to see in the many paintings of Jesus how all the painters show him so different.

Sorry folks, art isn't everywhere. It needs some experience and education to reach the ability to tell art from bull-shit. Please don't get me wrong I do not pretend to have this ability.

Who are the people who say it IS art?

And why can only those people deem the subject art?

Everyone doesn't like the same things and it depends on the subject, the painter, the style, the relationshp not only between the viewer and the art but also the viewer and the painter. My mother has some of my art from grade school framed and hanging in her living room and she says it is art, so is it? If you said no then what if I told you it was one of Picassos first paintings. Now is it art?

You misunderstood me. Of course everybody has is own taste. Everyone has the right to say "this is art". You can do so, your mother can do and Picasso's mother too. But I stirctily decline the sentence repeatedly posed in this page that "everything is art".

You're quite right, swissbob. The difficulty lies in the fact that art (unlike science) is not objective but subjective.

As in the phrase Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
