“Anime” is an abbreviation of the word “animation” but outside Japan refers specifically to Japanese animation.

Anime has many genres typically found in any mass media form. Such genres include action, adventure, children's stories, comedy, drama, erotica (more specifically ecchi or hentai), medieval fantasy, occult/horror, romance, and science fiction.

Most anime includes content from several different genres, as well as a variety of thematic elements. Thus, some series may be categorized under multiple genres. For example, Neon Genesis Evangelion might be considered to fall into the genres of post-apocalyptic, science fiction, mecha, and drama. A show may have a seemingly simple surface plot, but at the same time may feature a far more complex, deeper storyline and character development. It is not uncommon for an action themed anime to also involve humor, romance, and even social commentary.

Yanagi-chan posted over 2 years ago: I'll explain why it's the best. First off, calling it the "best" is relative. It depends upon the person appreciating it and vice-versa. However, when I first latched on to anime, I got hooked immediately not just because of the drawing style. That would be a very shallow way of looking at such a soulful art form. Anime has more soul, more depth, and more edge than any written, serialized, or visual creation, be it book or film. The plots range from magical adventures to mecha-politics to romantic shoujos to adaptations to slices of life and so much more. The characters are dynamic, fantastic, enthralling, but with just the right touch of reality to make you believe that after all, life is not without its proverbial potholes. Nevertheless, despite the touches of reality, anime portrays reality AS IT SHOULD BE, not reality as it is---in other words, anime gives us the chance to dream and give substance to mere shadows of our dreams. It gives us that little more hope and little more faith that life is really worth living and love is really worth fighting for. Sure, there are kooky animes and hentai ones but then again, what we are talking about is the very core of anime. It represents human feelings, human decisions, human mistakes, and best of all, the human innocence of wanting to believe that there will always be a rainbow after the rain. Being with anime has given me so much enlightenment on how to live my life, deal with people around me, and cope with life's situations. I don't know just how many of you out there have seen this simple but beautiful truth about anime and I don't know if there are others who feel the way I do but to me, anime is so much more than just cute graphics, bishoujos, bishounens and kick-ass fight scenes. It has captured a piece of my heart and will forever be etched as a precious memory...it gives me hope...just like looking for snow angels in the spinning, starless sky.

The people who make anime certainly put a lot of work into it; like comic book writers they take incredible pride in their work and it really shows. And we, as fans, get to reap the benefits of that!

i love anime so much. i have my christmas wish list already to go. this Christmas will be filled with family, my kids laughter over his toys and the screams of all of the victims from elfen lied not to mention the body count in black lagoon. i might even throw in some laughter from magical shopping arcade to even out the day. well that said i need to get alot of sleep for all of the hours i'll be putting in watching anime this Christmas. (wake me on Dec. 24 th) lol.
