The name (an anagram for The Alias Men) used when directors wanted to pull their name off of a project, when the film was no longer under their creative control. The director had to satisfy a panel from the Directors Guild of America that their name shouldn't be used. It hasn't been utilised since 1999.
The picture is from the Alan Smithee film 'Burn Hollywood Burn', in which Eric Idle plays a director actually called Alan Smithee. This was in fact the last usage of the name.
