Besides the fact it’s a gun and people use it to kill each other (really, I mean, who thought “Hey let’s make this thing that shoots bits of metal at people at 300-500kms an hour so the bit of metal goes into their body and maybe goes right through their body! Awesome!”)...
Apparently in Iraq and Afghanistan, US soldiers were ditching their issued M16 ’s in favour of locally captured AK’s because they didn’t sieze up in the weather conditions like their M16 ’s did. So the AK is a well designed assualt rifle, yes.

its cheap and it kicks ass. Why on earth the British don’t use them instead of the poor SA-80 I have no idea.
The AK47 is rugged and dependable, but not as much so as many other rifles: FN/FAL, HK-91, M-14, Garand, AR-180, Galil and so on. AK is more reliable than the M-16, true. But then ANYTHING is more reliable than the M-16. The AK’s accuracy is wretched beyond 40 meters, and it’s so underpowered that most of the people shot with it aren’t even killed. But it IS cheap, and there’s a flourishing black market for it. For the cost of one new Steyr AUG , you could arm a whole platoon with AKs. Which is a consideration in the real world.

the AK is quite powerful actually. It can deliver ball ammo through thick hardwood (not yet FMJ or AP), and remember that even a bullet in the leg can kill. The AK 74 is quite better with the tumbling 5.45 ammo. it tumbles more than the M-16’s 5.56. And the story of soldiers throwing their M-16s is rare in Iraq actually. They still prefer the M4 or the M16A4 over AKs. For one, they have KAC kits for the M4s.

Probably is the best for the 2nd/3rd world constripts who have to use it. Superior but finicky western rifles would be wasted on them. BUT notice how SF units who have their pick of weapons don’t choose AKs, most prefering AR15 clones – advantages in better accuracy, lower weight and better ergonomics appeal – good weapons discipline takes care of the rest.
The use of the AK by US troops in Iraq has mainly been by vehicle crews who have had to dismount in urban operations and needed a weapon beyond the issued 9mm.
