a member list?

I know we’ll have a category forum for debates, but do you guys want a general forum?

adrian

Like a Top 100 Member list?

ergomag
ergomag posted over 6 years ago

1) Being able to create an ordered list (top 3 or top 5, say) in each category.

2) Show current number of comments, and show new comments as a link.

3) This idea is probably ridiculous, but…based on automatic comparisons of the lists members build, would it be possible to have “member lists you might like” links show up on your profile page?

This site & del.icio.us are awesome for finding stuff I know nothing about. The effort is appreciated!

Members lists you might like sounds cool

You need to seperate the categories! I’m sure you already know, but it just looks stupid when Sex is the best drink because it has votes in other Categories. Keep up the good work!

Simieski

Also an error message which makes you write out the addition again when a picture is the wrong size rather than just creating it without a picture.

How about adding more info in a person’s profile? Also, it would be nice to see a ‘created by’ option in the different Best choices.

NimbleMarmoset
NimbleMarmoset posted over 6 years ago

ah yes, a “created by” option would be ok. but then, if a person creates something for the sake of creating it, and doesn’t really think it is the best, so s/he deletes it.. the “created by” heading wouldn’t work.

Also, we should make sure that the member lists you might like thing doesn’t turn into members you might like, turning it in to a popularity contest. :)

It might be nice, also, to be able to have the things we have added as more ordered, that way the members with tons of things added won’t take forever to scroll through the list.

and then, yes, the notification on comments! :D

... I shrug!

A “Best…Best Stuff In The World” list. A top ten list of the best stuff that the most people agree on.

NimbleMarmoset

Something bothering me a tad:

I will bookmark an item.. but then after a time, I look into whatever it is, and find myself thinking “Dear GOD ! This is the best thing in the world!” So, I go about changing it from a bookmarked item to one of the best things.. but the process can be semi-long, and I then forget to re-add whatever the item was. Can we have an option to change from curious to the best in one move?

Kittyn
Kittyn posted over 6 years ago

A bulk option to remove more than one item at a time from my favourites list because I enjoy adding lots of items to a new catagory :)

By the way, how many members are there now?

adrian
adrian posted over 6 years ago

Just so you know, we’ve been listening – and even though we haven’t implemented everything, we’re getting there. The next item on our list is to get the site out there more.

Diva

Hi! As far as the profile: 1. demographics (birthday, location, type of work, etc…) 2. Friends/contacts on The Best Stuff In The World so I can easily check out what people are adding 3. Any Websites they have/like

I absolutely LOVE the updates to the site. I like how I can choose which category I want the choice associated with. It’s so frustrating when the categories are incorrect.

I also like the drop down box so I can select something that’s already there. Keep up the great work!

helllooooo

ok bare with me…

Just wanted to let you know when i am managing catagories or adding someone to a catagory…. when you type in a name, the little yellow window pops down to choose stuff from… When this happens it appears behind the advertisment and i can neither read the list or choose from it. :(

I have a spanky doo pooty so I don’t know why it doesn’t like me.

NimbleMarmoset
NimbleMarmoset posted over 6 years ago

first, i’d like to say this newest design is wonderful, and i thank all you for working on it and doing such a good job. :D

Now, for a suggestion.. there is something that is bothering me a bit. When adding items with similar names, the bar tends to do this thing where it selects one of the already created sections, refusing to allow me to make a new one. for example: i tried to add the name geoffrey for the best name, but I was unable to, because I kept being taken to another geoffrey. sigh It is a good name, isn’t it? And such a good speling…..

adrian
adrian posted over 6 years ago

Hi NimbleMarmoset. Thanks for your kind words.

I think that will be a limit of best stuff is the “Name Space”. All I can recommend is adding a new category to it that you want to put it under. We’ll keep it in mind as a feature to separate out the name space though.

summer
summer posted over 6 years ago

Dear team, I think that it would be really good if irrelevant comments under the topics could be erased when needed. I have just faced such a problem :)

summer
summer posted over 6 years ago

And also there have been too many absurd categories lately, including the repeated ones and the ones which are not in English (all should understand what is meant I think) but there is no time out button for the categories so they cannot be omitted.

adrian
adrian posted over 6 years ago

Hi Summer.

We will be implementing better forum style system for comments. With categories you can delete them (considering you are a trusted member) – just click on manage categories, and click on the cross button next to the category you want to delete.

summer
summer posted over 6 years ago

Thanx Adrian, and one more question: I know categories can be managed but it is possible as long as there is something best under that category. If that thing is taken to timeout, the 3 buttons (edit description, manage images and manage categories) are no more applicable to that category.

adrian
adrian posted over 6 years ago

That’s right, they are disabled so that item cant be edited any more, only comments can be made about it. That way we can see the item as it was timed out.

summer
summer posted over 6 years ago

Hey guys, some people keep adding dirty photos under the categories and this is really bothering me. I have been working like a warrior to erase those for a couple of days, so if you find out who adds them I’m sure you would do something. Best regards.

I like de ergomag’s idea of the “member lists you might like”, like de Neighbours in Last.fm, based on the similarity in the lists of the members. And also, the rsktkr’s idea of a “list of the best stuff that the most people agree on”.

I love this site!

worst stuff in the world, best stuff people dont really like that much. And probably a randomise feature

NimbleMarmoset
NimbleMarmoset posted over 6 years ago

do you think there could be a way to see who the people are who are curious in certain things? or is this already there and I just haven’t figured it out yet? :)

and how is it that things on people’s pages are ordered? because no often are the newest things added at the top of lists, so when i am skimming through pages, i have to skim all the way through all over again. it confuses me!

sorry for the pestersomyness!

adrian
adrian posted over 6 years ago

That’s a good point about who is curious and the order of peoples stuff. I’ll look at putting who is curious about something separately. The ordering at the moment is stuff that has been commented on and not viewed goes to the top, then there last adds. It makes sense for the persons profile, but not somebody looking at that profile. We’re still working on the whole profile thing. We’ll get it one day.

MaySurprise
MaySurprise posted over 6 years ago

One problem I’m experiencing is that when I’m entering in a new category, I can only see a handful of the relevant pre-existing categories. Adding a scroll bar to the list of matches would help prevent duplicates.

Another thing you’ve probably already thought of: The search engine doesn’t sort by closest match—which means that the more specific you are in choosing search terms, the harder it will be to find what you’re looking for. In other words, searching for “Homer Simpson” is less effective than searching for just “Homer.”

Beyond that, the site’s a lot of fun.

MaySurprise
MaySurprise posted over 6 years ago

Oh, one more thing: it’s a little frustrating that when you want to vote for something in just one category, you have to go through the process of unchecking everything else. There should be a button to “Check/Uncheck All”—and the default status should probably be unchecked to ensure that people actually know what categories they’re adding their vote to.

MaySurprise
MaySurprise posted over 6 years ago

I’m not sure if this is a bug or a feature, but bookmarking an item that you’ve already listed as your favorite will cancel your vote for it.

My guess is that users generally don’t realize this—partly because the number of people who “think this is the best” doesn’t immediately decrease the way it increases when you vote for something, and partly because it’s not clear. Many or most people who bookmark items are probably doing do in order to follow the comments page, or to keep an eye on an item’s vote tally.

On a related note, it took me a while to figure out what the “curious” statistic meant.

Thanks, Dean

It would seem that trusted members are no longer allowed to add categories, I think we should still be allowed to

adrian
adrian posted over 6 years ago

Any member can add categories – it is just that an item has limits on how many you can add.

adrian
adrian posted over 6 years ago

Hi MaySurprise,

You have a lot of good points, we’ll look at implementing those at a future date. We have a lot planned for extending the search.

It’s a feature with the bookmark and vote. The idea that you can upgrade your bookmark to a vote. Bookmarks are more for something that you are meaning to try. You can still track comments from items that you vote on.

NimbleMarmoset
NimbleMarmoset posted over 6 years ago

Might I suggest a “mark as read” function for items with new comments in them? I’ve taken to deleting items like “google” and “firefox” because they get so many new comments and adds each day, that the little new comment image comes up.. and when I go to read the comment, the page takes forever to load. There are some items I just don’t want to read the comments for, but still, the new comment image appears. Due to my obsessive compulsive state, I am forced to read.. my computer slows down. You know? Just a little pet peeve of mine. :) Not entirely important, really.

summer
summer posted over 6 years ago

Well Nimble, I face the same problem and what I do is just clicking on the newly commented items one after the other quickly so that I don’t have to wait the page to load, nor I have to read the new comment, and the little yellow new comment image disappears. >:)

NimbleMarmoset
NimbleMarmoset posted over 6 years ago

hehe! i’ve tried that as well. i think your computer must be snazzier than mine, because mine just refuses to handle my quick little mouse. ;)

summer
summer posted over 6 years ago

:)

Well then it seems like you’ll be dealing with the new comments until there’s a “mark as read” function hehe.

i notice that now, when youre at the main page, you can move your mouse upwards and it shows the thingies, instead of having to move it overtop the thing then move back down to see what the thing is.

man i suck.

i’m not certain if that is suggested before but, being able to categorize our bests in our pages, would be great.

summer

Dear deathbypingu, There is a private page for comments of other users you know, but quaternions and I used to talk about stuff under the category they belong because subjects just follow subjects and somehow the messages are related to the topic anyway :)

Sorry for the inconvenience, we no more do that :D
