Absurdism is a philosophy stating that the efforts of humanity to find meaning in the universe will ultimately fail (and, hence, are absurd) because no such meaning exists, at least in relation to humanity. The word Absurd in this context does not mean "logically impossible", but rather "humanly impossible".

"Absurdism is a philosophy stating that the efforts of humanity to find meaning in the universe will ultimately fail". Am I missing something? Do any of you know what this means? Sorry, I just read The Stranger, and "I'm a banana" doesn't really apply.

An act or instance of the ridiculous

It has more than just one simple exclusive meaning. That's all you missed.

Vano, I would politely disagree. An absurdist viewpoint - as I understand my dictionary - implies that the world is essentially meaningless. To then look for levels of meaninglessness would then be (it seems to me) what's called in logic a non sequitur (Latin, it does not follow). Purple Octopus, Hideous Monster and I have (semi-seriously) explored similar ground in Useless Information (mostly on page 2).

Could we argue that Camus writes at a higher level than 'I am a banana?' I would be interested to know belacqua's viewpoint on this, as I know that he is more experienced in what you might call 'formal' philosophy than I am.

Hm, I tend to agree with Vano up to a point: "The absurd arises from the confrontation of man asking for reason and a world that keeps irrationaly silent." (Camus, The Myth of Sisyphus; my crapy translation). The quote has all the most important elements, IMHO. Absurdism doesn't claim anything about the state of the world, if it has meaning or is meaningless, it's not an ontological position. Absurdism says: the world (or life) might or might not have a meaning - we can't understand it anyway, and in this regard it's an episthemological position. But absurdism draws the conclusion that the dignity of the human consists in trying to understand even though we know we will always fail. This is the ethical implication of absurdism. This is why Camus imagines Sysyphus a lucky person. You can find this motive elsewhere too, for example: "No matter, try again, fail again, fail better." (Beckett, Worstward Ho) or the famous last lines of his Unnamable: "Where am I, I don't know, I'll never know, in the silence, in the silence you don't know, you must go on, I can't go on, I'll go on."

Sooo...if I understand you, bel, would you say that somebody like Camus 'fails better' than your average mortal?

And that Sisyphus - who in Greek mythology was condemned in Hell to roll a large stone uphill for ever, only for it to roll back down again just before he got to the top - was 'lucky' because he knew his 'existence' would never get worse? Or better, for that matter?

Are you sure the 'try again' part isn't a subcatagory? The Stranger was based on the absurd and it was made clear that life isn't much worth living. Or rather, accepting what happens to you, as you will have the same fate as everyone else. More Existential than Nihilistic. Though the main character was fairly indifferent to situations that may have caused others to react with more feeling, Camus's point is still quite clear. Once more, Kierkegaard is commonly labeled an Absurdest, so I wonder if just like Existentialism, it breaks off between the Atheist and the Christian. We may be talking about seperate branches.

Oh, How the Lobster Dances...When the purple Toor Daal sings...He views his time like serpents....and dreams of slinkier things. To converse with such a creature...Is to hold a DOG by ear...For when the Lobsters do their cheerful dance, your mind is nowhere near. (Unless, of course....)
