Looking on the web,I found out a bit more info :

This Roman object was found near Bonn in Germany. It looks similar to the other, doesn't it?Again, according to the above blog, nobody is sure about what it was used for.....

Here's some more-a recent find in the UKThank you to http://thehumanjourney.net)-

"Work at Smith and Sons Gill Mill gravel quarry started in 1988 and has been ongoing ever since. The focus of attention over the years has been a major Roman settlement lying along a road crossing the Windrush valley in the vicinity of Gill Mill House. From 2001 onwards an area of c 27 ha has been examined as the quarry has extended down the valley south-east of Gill Mill House, revealing more Roman activity."

Ohpp, too late Tribble.

I went and looked ahead without asking. Sorry :)

But I thought it was some sort of weird flower when I heard the name of it...

Rome built 'big'things.Huge monuments and temples-buildings in the capital did have several storeys. Is it something used by the building trade to form either a scaffolding or perhaps a strengthening structure-kind of like this...you can see the limited experience I have in building anything, can't you?!!!Wink

A weird (and painful if played with) football?

A hamster ball?

An utterly useless fish bowl?

A flower pot?

An orb for capturing spirits of long deceased souls?

A wedding ring?

It kind of looks like a face...do you see it?

Oh! I know what it is! I'm sure this time! It's a model of a spaceship! :D

You see, once upon a time, in the jolly land of Rome, people were walking their merry way when they saw a strange object zoom across the sky. It was very fast and very quiet so people hardly noticed it. But one guy glimpsed the ship's shape. Ever since then, that guy tried to construct an exact copy of what he saw that fateful day but was made to quit his project when they burned him at a stake for heresy.

At least, I THINK that's how it was :(

I think he was reprieved on account of his claim -proving true-that it was a design to improve the Roman fleets fighting capabilities-twelve slaves to a rowlock!

Well, the people thought he was worshipping a heathen god and taking orders from him to make the Dodecahedron. They all got paranoid that it was a plot to take over Rome so before anything could happen, they burned him at the stake. So he was burned for heresey AND his ideas.

Yeah, but what was it in old Rome?

Tribble
Tribble posted over 4 years ago

They had LOADS of paintings in old Rome-here is one from a wall in Pompeii-all they needed to do was commission an artist to make small ones and place them in the holes....savvy?

Wait, but how big is the thing?

It could either be a model for something, or an actual object that people used for some reason.

Remember when I said that it was a model for a spaceship?

what is that stuff anyway..it's like a ball made by stone and had a lot of hole..

vodka keith
vodka keith posted over 4 years ago

I think it’s an early version of a grenade. It’s balanced on all sides to roll towards there enemies in a straight line, theres holes everywhere for the lethal gunpowder or whatever they used to exploside and the the powder inside could have been held together by a thin layer of wax. Because some of them were found with a waxy residue still inside.

Perhaps is was a whistling cannonball, designed to strike terror before it hit.

Or maybe a big cat toy for tigers and the like.

A trophy of some sort – given only to those who could find a use for it?

Tribble

Thank you to all for making so many interesting and entertaining suggestions-the grenade(given that the Romans were a 'military minded' people)seems very possible. Here are some stones designed for a Roman catapult currently in The Malton Museum,Yorkshire,England.

Maybe it's a 5- or 6-person handcuff. How they get their hands in and out of there, I don't know…

Thank you for inviting me Tribble. :) Haven't seen so many interesting comments in a lot of time. :P

LOL @ the 5-person handcuff idea. x) , my vote goes for that one.

But my first thought when I saw it was of a helm, the boat thing. A boat with 12 directions. xD Hey, it can be from a submarine!

Well....as for the "out" part, maybe they didn't want them to get out?

Do you know about the primiteve monkey trap? You put a coconut inside a box with a small hole. The monkey can put his hand in to get the nut but it can not take it out with the nut in it. The monkey will not leave the nut and you get the monkey.
