The best number ever. It’s the answer to the question of life, the universe and everything.

42 was the answer given to the answer to Life the universe and everything by a rather large computer in Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy – Radio Show/Book/TV & Film.

”.... Thursdays – I never did get the hang of Thursdays….”

It’s one hell of a smart computer! But lets not forget that robot from the movie ‘Short Circuit’.

Douglas Adams’s version: 42 = The Answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything.

My version: 42 = 2×21 gram (the weight of two lifes)

Well said, Viresz! I love 21 grams too. :)

It is the answer. But WHAT was the question?

fourty-two? Or did Adams meant, that life, the universe and everything are 4 2 (for two), for couples? Or was he just having a tea for two… ;-).

Vano

If this Adam you speak of was more than a story book character, being the first man on earth, would he understand the concept of the number 42?

The answer to life is different for everyone. And the answer to why my dog eats cat shit… I suppose this is 42 as well?

Starling
Starling posted over 6 years ago

Vano, I believe Blacky was actually talking about the author of the book. You know, Douglas Adams?

Anyways, 42 is the wickedest number. Ever. Because it’s so effing random. It’s like “Cheese! 42!”

Ah yes, but I still will ask anyone this, does it really make sense that there would be a universal ‘meaning of life’ answer? Or question for that matter?

^ I agree that by default, the book is always better than the movie. However, in the case of Hitchhiker’s Guide, I think this fact is worth a special mention because:

a) The series at this point has been adapted to virtually every storytelling medium known to man, making it hard for anyone looking to get into it to find a starting point; and

b) The tremendous popularity of HGttG is actually based on the books, which would not necessarily be a person’s first guess if they were unfamiliar with the series.

I’m partial to the radio series too, but it is a bit hard to find, and really the books are what people are talking about when they’re talking about Hitchhiker’s Guide.

Moral of the story: read the books, damnit! :)

Silthilar
Silthilar posted over 6 years ago

Don’t worry about it. I seem to have a knack for making people feel bad; I just responded to a similar response from bailey on the Overpopulation post.

There’s a radio series? Cool! The last time I listened to any stories via radio (discounting Prairie Home Companion) was when I was like 6.

Silthilar
Silthilar posted over 6 years ago

Hmm, bailey’s name seems to have been crossed out. Any idea how to put hyphens around something without doing that?

-bailey-
-bailey- posted over 6 years ago

You can put an ‘at’ sign on either side of the dashes like this: @-bailey-@. The ‘at’ signs won’t normally show. I just figured that out.

The radio series was actually the original incarnation of Hitchhiker’s Guide. You can almost tell when you read the books, as the dialouge sounds often like it was intended to be performed. If you’re up for it, I believe the unabridged version can be obtained from Amazon UK. Pricey, but a lot of fun.

Well actually, Deep Thought was producing a single answer to a single question, but in reality, the Universe is computing itself. As it does so, it maps out its own spacetime geometry to the ultimate precision allowed by the laws of physics. So… does it compute 42 as the answer to everything? Hmmmm…. :)

Saddam, the visual image is startling enough, thank you! All I know is that once I read this Galaxy Hiking book, everything will be okay.

Saddam
Saddam posted over 6 years ago

Yes its all from Hitchhikers – don’t worry we are not all going mad or in some strange cult or masonic lodge – its just a book …. and a tv show …. and a film…. and originally a radio show!
