The heart (♥) has long been used as a symbol to refer to the spiritual, emotional, moral, and in the past also intellectual core of a human being. As the heart was once widely believed to be the seat of the human mind, the word heart continues to be used poetically to refer to the soul, and stylized depictions of hearts are extremely prevalent symbols representing love.

How did that shape come to be associated with the heart, anyway?
I have a theory about this. I thought of it when we were in high school dissecting frogs, but no one’s ever confirmed it. Most of the time people think it’s dumb. But before they could cut open people and look at their organs safely, they had to cut up other animals. And frogs have three-vesseled hearts that really do kind of have the vessels arranged in a somewhat triangular manner but curved like the symbol of a heart. So I think that’s where it came from. But I’m not certain.
