Frequently Asked Questions

So what is BeStuff! about?
BeStuff! is an open, organic, polymorphous site which, depending on the user, could take on diverse forms and meanings. The site simply asks you to input your "best stuff" in the world: whether it be a song that inspires you, your favourite little Indian restaurant or the best explication of Kantian aesthetics ... it's up to you!
As people share the things they think are best, you'll be able to discover what other people think are cool too.
-
So how do I add stuff?
Easy! To add a new item, just add it from our homepage or within a category page. New items can also be added by suggesting a better item on the homepage or item description page
-
Hey! This person/place/thing isn't the best. I want to have my say!
If you don't believe certain item is the best, then you can always suggest something better. On the item's description page, then just click the "There's Better" button and add your preferred "stuff".
-
I want to update the description / add another item image / add another item category
Descriptions, images and additional categories can be added/edited using the controls on the description page. You'll need to be a member to manage these options.
To update a description, hit the "edit description" link. The item description will become an editable text field. Previous revisions and formatting instructions will also become available.
To add images, just hit the "manage images" link.
To add another item category, just hit the "manage category" link. You can add extra categories in case you feel the item can span across several categories. i.e. a ‘Green Tea' could be ‘The Best Tea' or ‘The Best Beverage'. Once you have created a category, this will be available for other members to add items to.
-
What's a Bookmark?
If you spot an item that you would like to keep an eye on, but don't want to vote on or suggest an alternative, then the "Bookmark this item" button will add the item under your Bookmarks section of your Profile page.
Bookmarking is the "neutral" way of adding items to your profile page. They can be used in a number of ways. Maybe there's an item you where thinking of buying or an activity you wanted to do, then bookmarking will help you find the descriptions of the items quickly and easily.
-
How do I update my profile?
You can update your details or profile image from your Profile page. Just hit the "edit profile" link within your profile area.
-
What's a "Trusted Member"?
A Trusted Member is basically a member that has administrator privileges. They are able to edit item titles and categories, can delete any image and can even mark item for suspension (called 'timeout') if they think an item is deemed offensive or spammy.
Trusted Members are members that the BeStuff! team have noted as being positively active within the community and have invited them to become a Trusted Member. Of course with great power comes great responsibility...

What is a "Locked" item?
Occasionally a particular item that has been posted on the site may get constantly vandalised or abused. To keep up the spirit of fun on our site, we sometimes lock these items so that the majority of users won't be offended.
When an item is 'locked', you can not change or add descriptions, categories, and images, however voting is still allowed.
If you see something offensive, please let us know!

Do you have RSS / Atom subscriptions?
RSS 2.0 and Atom feeds are available for multiple areas of our website:
General feed from the homepage: This lists the latest "stuff" that's been added to Bestuff.
Category feed: This will give you the latest additions to an individual category. Just hit the RSS/Atom link from the category listing that you want to to keep track of.
Profile feed: Want to keep an eye on someone's list? Well subscribe to their feed from their Profile page.

I can't see the Image Collage on the home page? / There's a big white space on the home page?
If you're having trouble seeing the tiled Image Collage on the homepage, then it may be your Ad Blocking software installed on your browser that's causing the problem.

Hey, why aren't these Vote Buttons working?
As we use loads of Javascript goodness on our site to make it all fancy schmancy, make sure you have Javascript enabled in your web browsers preferences/options area.
