About Me

Dear Pope Benedict XVI,

Before I start anything else, allow me first to greet you a good Godly day!

Papa, let me apologize, for I am a complete stranger to you. I certainly know that right now, you do wonder who I am and what this is for. To admit it, I guess, I must not be the one to discuss this matter. I must not be the one to let you know, but if I wouldn’t do this, who else would care to?

Papa, I’m sorry, I am disturbing you. I am aware that you have loads of work to do and going over this letter would ruin your schedule. But if I won’t do this, I’ll regret forever. And forever shall the world be in misery. So, let me speak up dear pope and let my voice be heard; this is not for me but for this chaotic world that needs a change.

Actually, I should have done this before and I repent, I just took the action this time. It has been long since I became cognizant about this place and the dramatic evolution it has undergone. I have long noticed that this Earth went through and is going through a series of outrageous changes. Technology has given rise to a quality life and living, and modernization came along. Everyone enjoys the benefits, no one can question this. But little by little, man’s character has been affected and day by day worsens. The moral values that should have been engraved in one’s heart have been suddenly ignored, and worse, thrown and forgotten. People now continuously compete for fame, power and money; and greed appears ruling the place. People do everything for their own selfish ambitions. Thus, this paradise turns now a hell filled with evil desires. Its people no longer live for true happiness and contentment.

Moreover, people are now poisoned with severe idealism which roots from the present time-idealism which results to abrupt impatience if not pleased. These world inhabitants always look forward to what is perfect and what is pointlessly proper. There is no place for just that “good enough” and even just for the “silly but bearable action.”  If you have brought out a flaw or a single fault, be afraid, for the world may condemn you. It’s wild and fierce, so you better hide and live your life at the world’s nook. If ever you have uttered an incorrect word, better cringe and bow your head. The crowd would mock at you and judge you through. If you have committed a simple mistake, slouch now for they will just degrade and humiliate you. Face it; this is the world nowadays - boorish and dismaying.

Here, every little action induces a big issue. Tickle your friend and he’ll knock you down. Call him a ‘bastard’ and he’ll kick your ass. Make a rumor and you’ll be slapped. Trip him and you’ll be punched. Crack a joke and you’ll receive an insult. You’re lucky if ever you’ll not witness a scratching-of-faces and hair-pulling incident. Correct me if I’m wrong, all of these result to endless fights and intense killings. Despair and hatred then create a gap among people and leave a scar in each heart. And gradually, you’ll just realize that those little things banged out your lives.

Believe it or not, this idealistic world accompanied by selfishness and a serious crave to lord over this kingdom, becomes a place of havoc and deterioration. And everybody suffers.

Is this the world we long to see? the world we want to call our ‘home’?

Well, I guess, we have to do something about this. Every problem has a corresponding solution. And I’m convinced, that there is only one word we should consider right now. One word to move our world. One word to change our lives. Simply, TOLERANCE. Yes, it’s tolerance.

If people would just tolerate those silly deeds, then there would be more or less 80 billion happy people. Hatred will be alleviated and everything will somehow be fine. Sometimes, we have to ignore all those rumors and jokes and simply laugh at them. Unless they don’t make such big deal, better forget them. Well, we’ll lose nothing if we do so.

If people would just tolerate some minor mistakes, then all sorts of pressure would be diminished. Then, we’ll be able to eliminate those beauty-reducing wrinkles and get ready to glow and shine. And all will be happy. And I believe, mistakes are the cores of discovery and victory. In fact, Jose Rizal quoted, “if a man has done a mistake, he should acknowledge it.”

People are people. They’re not omnipotent and perfect. So, if somehow, he tends not to do it properly, just let him continue. And sooner, he’ll just realize it. Let him change by himself, don’t demean and force him. Sometimes, all we need is not a brilliant mind that speaks but a kind heart that understands.

And I guess, if people would loosen the screw for greed and let other people bloom too, then there would be no more fights and no more wars. No more corrupt. No more cheaters. No more killers. Besides, power, fame and money are not the doors to victory and contentment. It’s when you touch one’s life that you become truly happy and successful.

Being tolerant is being noble. We don’t have to always be strict and austere. Calm down. Be patient. Be considerate. Be sensitive. But don’t extend beyond the limit. Attain world peace but maintain discipline. And all shall be merry.

Oh dear pope, I may not make much sense to call your attention and stir people into action. I’m not Mohandas Gandhi. I’m just a simple teenage Filipino girl who has big dreams for the world not as a martyr but as a concerned youngster of this planet. And it’s up to you to judge if this earns a point to consider and ponder on.

Lovingly yours,

                                                                                 Jacqueline Diaz
